Tips to Help Adults Get Back on the Bike
For generations of Americans, almost no childhood memory is as prized as the day they learned to ride a bicycle. Bikes at that early age represent nothing less than personal freedom, that first opportunity to head out and experience the world without parents, teachers or any other adult guiding the way.
Many people leave the bike behind when they get that first car and that's a shame, as research shows that cycling does wonderful things for riders’ physical and mental health, providing a top-notch cardio workout that increases blood flow and heart rate while boosting mood and brain function. If you're a little older and want to get back on the bike after multiple years (or decades), there are a few strategies to bear in mind. Don’t worry, though, there’s nothing complicated; turns out, riding a bike is an easy as, well, riding a bike.
This Year’s Model: Before you head out on that first trip, it’s very important to give your bike the once over. If you’re not mechanically minded, find a local bike shop that can check to see if everything’s in full working order and that your bike still “fits” you well. If your bike is an older model, it might be worth investing in a new one as they are generally more lightweight and easier to maneuver. Also pick up a puncture-repair kit, properly-fitting helmet and a working bell.
Better Together: In addition to all the physical benefits, getting back on the bike can do wonders for your social life. Many cities have local bike clubs that will not only help you meet new people but provide greater motivation to keep riding. If joining a club sounds a bit daunting, then set up informal rides with friends and neighbors. These don’t have to be lengthy or take you far from home; the goal is just to get people together for healthy fun. Consider ending each ride with a meal out, picnic or pub stop.
Play It Safe: As with any new workout regimen, if you’re getting back on the bike after a long break, make sure you consult your doctor first. Also, when you do go for that initial ride, don’t overexert yourself. Listen to your body and choose routes that are enjoyable, as opposed to those that are too strenuous or might cause pain. And don’t forget that cycling can be thirsty work – take plenty of water with you and some snacks to keep well-fueled.
Road Rules: For your own safety, remember the rules of the road and look out for drivers and obstacles. Riding during the day is safer than riding at night even if you have a light or reflectors. Always wear bright clothing and a helmet.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.
