March 23, 2023Tips to Make the Most of Your After-Work Hours
For many people, the best part of the day is the last part of the day, those after-work hours that enable them to turn their focus from professional pressures to personal pleasures. For some, that means a home-cooked meal and time with the family; for others, a vigorous workout and binge-watching a current favorite series.
Academic research has confirms the substantial impact the hours between work and sleep have on our physical and emotional well-being. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your after-work hours.
Clothes Make the Mood: It might seem trivial, but experts emphasize the importance of changing out of your work clothes as soon as you get home. The process of transitioning to more comfortable garments sends a powerful signal to your mind and body that work is done and it’s time to relax.
The Right Routine: Establishing a pleasant, personal routine gives you something to look forward to at the end of the day and reinforces the message to your mind and body that it’s OK to relax. Routines will differ from person to person, naturally enough, but should reflect who you are and what you need. If you’re someone who craves social interaction, add that to the routine; if you need quiet, respect that impulse.
Get Moving: It’s impossible to overstate the impact regular exercise has on our physical and emotional outlook. If you cannot squeeze in workout time earlier in the day, incorporate it into your post-work routine. This might take the form of an in-person workout class, online yoga or a run through your neighborhood. If you can’t fit in a long workout, commit to a 10-minute walk or a 10-minute stretching session.
Turn Up the Tunes: Putting on favorite music at the close of the workday is another effective way to signal your brain and body it’s time to chill. Depending on your interests and how your day went, the selections can range from calming classical to celebratory, upbeat pop. Either way, music helps you relax and maximize your after-work routine.
Finish Your Chores: There are few things more annoying than realizing you have a sink full of dirty dishes as you brush your teeth before bed. It’s important to do your chores as soon as you can and ideally in the moment, like washing the dishes as you cook or hanging up your coat as soon as you get home. Leaving these bothersome tasks for the end of the night can create a burden that weighs on you when you should be enjoying downtime.
Change Things Up: A major part of having an after-work plan that you look forward to is scheduling activities that feel special. It helps to incorporate some newness into your weeknights, and it doesn’t have to be something big, either. You can have a make-your-own pizza night with your partner or invite a neighbor over for a glass of wine. This adds some excitement to your work week.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.
