Airport Baggage Carousel Etiquette
Air travel is more hectic than ever these days, with record numbers of passengers crowding the nation’s airports. Delays are commonplace, unsold seats rate and on-board amenities reduced to the bare minimum unless you possess the wherewithal to fly first class.
It's only adding insult to injury to note passengers can expect little relief even at their journey’s end – the baggage carousel. The wait can seem interminable, and tempers can grow short as weary travelers jockey for position in order to claim their property. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps passengers can take to ensure the baggage claim process goes as smoothly as possible for themselves and everyone else.
Stand Back: Some passengers take up positions right against the carousel and refuse to move for anyone. Don’t be that person. Instead, stand away from the carousel to accommodate the inevitable comings and goings of people as they step forward to claim their bag.
Positive Identification: Many suitcases look alike these days, so it’s vitally important to check your luggage tag to determine if that bag in question is really yours. Indeed, it’s a good policy to repeat the process before departing the area for good. Also consider adorning your bag with something unique and significant to you to facilitate luggage identification. And if you do remove someone’s luggage by mistake, airport etiquette requires you to immediately place it back on the carousel.
No Swing Zone: Goodness knows it’s tight quarters around the baggage carousel, so be careful not to swing your suitcase off the conveyor when the time comes. Always be conscious of the people around you and be patient with your fellow passengers as you navigate your way through the crowd to the exit.
Animal (And Child) Control: Flying with kids and/or pets cannot help but add to your travel fatigue and that’s why it is imperative to keep them under control at the baggage carousel. Exerting the proper amount of discipline will make the process more efficient not just for you but for everyone else.
Keep It Down: Treat the baggage claim area like you would any other communal space; that is, with consideration of the people around you. Don’t engage in loud conversations, including placing your phone on speaker. Do not subject everyone to the content of your conversation.
Keep Your Cool: It’s been a long flight, you’re anxious to reach your final destination and your bag is still nowhere to be seen. A vexing situation, to be sure, but one that calls for patience and calm, so avoid expressing anger or frustration that will only feed the negative emotions you’re experiencing.
