Steps to Boost Your Energy at Any Age
Life in 21st century America can be exhausting, what with the demands placed on us by family, work and friends, to say nothing of the attention-grabbing 24-hour news cycle, the internet and social media. The result is a world that makes it increasingly easy, dare one say even normal, to feel physically and emotionally depleted.
Fortunately, there are some basic steps you can take to turn off the noise and regroup. Here are a few strategies you can pursue to boost your energy and sense of well being at any age.
Bust a Move: You can’t expect to sit all day and have energy, whether you’re isolated at your desk at work or stuck at home. The solution is to prioritize as best possible adding movement to your daily routine, whether it’s walking, jogging, cycling, yoga, Zumba or something else entirely.
Even a 10-minute walk after dinner or simple stretching exercises will do wonders for your body and help you sleep better, another key factor in boosting energy.
Food Is Fuel: There’s a time and place for all food, but research confirms that certain types of food can drag down your energy levels. Your goal should be to prioritize consuming the proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, as well as fruits and vegetables, while strictly limiting processed foods. Eat with intention, remaining conscious at all times of what you are putting into your body.
Happy Habits: Lack of energy is rarely an issue when people are engaged in things they enjoy, so try to incorporate as best possible pleasurable activities into your daily schedule. Not only will this strategy bring a smile to your face, it will substantially increase the energy and enthusiasm you bring to all the other day’s activities.
Stress Control: Perhaps more than any other single factor, stress can play hell with your energy levels, as it requires you to divert your emotional resources in a less-than-joyful direction. Indeed, if you're severely stressed, you probably won’t be sleeping well, may not have the energy to make nutritious meals and might even skip your workouts. If this is you, it is imperative to seek support from a mental health professional as soon as possible.
Fluid Reduction: If you're looking to boost your energy, the first thing to consider is the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink. Caffeine may give you that morning boost to start your day but consuming it later in the day can negatively impact your sleep patterns. The same holds true for alcohol.
Say “Yes” to “No”: Overextending yourself certainly isn’t going to do your energy level any favors. So being able to say “no” to requests that drain you is a crucial skill to learn.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.
