Tips to Begin (and Keep On) Journaling
While journaling is as old as written communication itself, the pastime has taken on new depths in recent decades amid the explosive growth and expansion of the internet and social media. In 2025, journaling provides a respite from the ceaseless onslaught of technology, giving practitioners a quiet place to collect their thoughts, chronicle their experiences and consider their place in the wider world.
There is much to recommend in that process, with research confirming that regular journaling reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood, boosts memory, enhances cognitive processing and promotes creativity. If those are benefits you would like to tap into, here are a few tips to help you make journaling an integral part of your life.
Looks Aren’t Everything: Stores across the country carry a wide selection of specialized blank journals they are more than willing to sell you, but it pays not to get too picky about that sort of thing. For those new to journaling, it sometimes helps to start with a legal pad to alleviate any pressure you might feel to wax rhapsodic. Also consider keeping a digital journal through such apps as Day One.
Mightier Than the Sword: If you do opt for the analog approach, you will want to find a pen or pencil that really works for you. Experiment with different kinds until you find the one instrument that will make your journaling as rewarding as possible. Once you've identified the model you want, buy it in bulk to ensure you always have spares.
Maintain That Schedule: As with all hobbies, finding a specific time each day to journal will go a long way towards maintaining your consistency. Many people favor mornings, collecting their thoughts over that first cup of coffee before the rush of the day’s activities set in. For others, evenings work best, when said activities and their reactions to them are still fresh in the mind. Experiment for a while before deciding which time of the day is best for you.
No Right Way to Write: Always bear in mind that there is no single way to make a journal entry; it’s all about what works for you. If you’re at a loss, start by beginning each entry the same way or try the stream-of-consciousness approach, jotting down thoughts and feelings as they arise. Some practitioners prefer answering open-ended questions such as, “What’s been on my mind lately?” As always, go with your intuition.
Comes and Goes: You are journaling for yourself, so don’t sweat it if the world’s activities require you to skip a day – or even longer. This is not homework; let the journal call to you.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.
