Cooking Tips To Promote Weight Loss
The new year brings with it New Year’s resolutions, and decades of research confirms that losing weight is perpetually at the top of many Americans’ lists. January as a result brings a surge in gym memberships, if not actual usage, and people signing up for Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and the like.
Overlooked amid the hype, however, is the fact that one of the most effective weight-loss strategies is free and right under consumers’ noses — eat out less often. Simply put, preparing meals at home is the best thing you can do for your health, as it empowers you to control of what goes into your food and your body. With the new year upon us, here are some tips to bear in mind to help you fulfill your home-cooking resolution.
Prize Vegetables: It’s hardly a revelation to note that vegetables are among the healthiest things on earth, packed with vitamins and nutrients and not many calories. A key first step in your campaign is put veggies at the top of your shopping list and actively plan meals around them rather than meat. For instance, try swapping out beef for beans in your tacos and then load up that shell with freshly chopped salsa, tomatoes and lettuce. And no matter the meal, get adventurous in your approach to vegetables by looking beyond the staples to more exotic varieties.
Sour on Sugar: We all have a sweet tooth to a greater or lesser degree but the fact remains that sugar, while tasty, is loaded with calories and carries no nutritional value. True, some sugar occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, milk and grains, but we’re talking about the added sugar found in even the most innocuous-seeming processed foods. The answer is to reduce your exposure to that sweet stuff by cooking your meals from scratch using fresh ingredients. Also rethink your drink to further eliminate sugar.
All Hail Whole Grains: Americans of a certain age will recall a time when white bread was pretty much the only bread Mom could find at the store. Happily, that is no longer the case and it is imperative to good health to opt instead for whole-grain breads, crackers and cereals. Eating whole food also fills you up, not out, which should be a real boon for your weight-loss efforts.
Brown rice is a whole grain; white rice is not. And never remove the skin from fruits and vegetables, as that decreases their fiber content.
Set A Schedule: All the effort involved in researching, purchasing and preparing healthy meals at home comes with a cost in terms of time. That's why it is imperative you set a home-cooking schedule and explore any advantages that present themselves. For example, look for dishes you can cook once and eat two or three times during the week and consider using a slow cooker to do a lot of the work for you.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.
